Troup County - A brief history

Troup County was the 70th county organized; it was a landlot county acquired from the Creek Indians in 1826. The county was named for Governor George M. Troup, "The Hercules of State Rights," and an ardent advocate of "Indian Removal" despite being a cousin of Chief William McIntosh.

The county seat, LaGrange, is named for the ancestral home of Revolutionary War hero Marquis de LaFayette. LaFayette Fountain, a replica of the LaFayette statue in LePuy, France, also salutes the Marquis de LaFayette. It stands on the courthouse square in LaGrange.

The cities of West Point and Hogansville are also in Troup County. Originally called Franklin, West Point's current name comes from being near the westernmost point on the Chattahoochee River, where its southwestward flow from the mountains and by Atlanta quickly turns toward the south-southeast to form the state line with Alabama. Part of West Point is in Harris County, GA where it is part of the Columbus, GA-AL Metropolitan area while the Troup County portion is part of the Lagrange Micropolitan Area.

The town of Hogansville was ultimately incorporated in 1870, though it has a unique beginning in the vision of its namesake, William Hogan. Hogan settled the land after the 1826 State Land Grant into his pre-Civil War plantation. Two important transit routes, the Atlanta-West Point Rail Line and the east-west road to Augusta that is now Georgia Highway 100, intersected on Hogan's Land. Through his vision and the work and planning of his family, grants at the crossroad were given with the stipulation that a depot be built there. It was this early that became the quaint small town.
